Who Owns Hisense Refrigerators?

Most modern refrigerators are made by a company called Hisense, but the company is not owned by any one individual or company. Instead, multiple units of investors own the rights to this brand. This makes it harder to find who owns the refrigerators in an individual’s home, but just remember that is doesn’t matter how many companies own hisense refrigerators: your personal refrigerator is still owned by you!

Who owns hisense refrigerators? This post explores the history of a prominent brand in consumer electronics, Hisense, as well as its multiple owners.

The company Hisense was founded in 1952, by Dr. Jiansheng Ma and several investors. The initial investment was only $50,000, and Dr. Ma was a graduate student at Columbia University at the time. The company initially manufactured radios for Sears & Roebuck and other department store chains in New York City (their first store opened August 29th of 1954). Hisense eventually diversified into other electronics and appliances, including televisions (which they began using the Hisense brand name for in 1958).

The company is still publicly traded, its headquarters are located in China, and it is currently headed by Huanquan Liu. The company was originally founded as a division of the publicly traded TCL Corporation. The majority of TCL Corporation’s stock is held by investment funds and institutions (some of which may also own hisense refrigerators), but the Hisense brand is controlled by two separate companies: one product-oriented (Hisense Co.) and one technology-themed (Tsing Long Holdings), both headquartered in Hong Kong.

Although the company is headquartered in China, the main board of directors (including Huanquan Liu) are located in Hong Kong. The company’s market cap is approximately $2 billion dollars. According to the most recent available financial statements, the net income for 2015 was approximately $411 million dollars; the return on assets was approximately 11.6 percent (corresponding to a share price of about $7.30), and that for 2016, their return on assets was about 24 percent (corresponding to a share price of about $9.44). That suggests that Hisense is currently considered a healthy stock with a relatively solid balance sheet.

Hisense has a long history in the United States, starting with its first store opening in 1954. It first entered the U.S. market with televisions, and expanded into refrigerators and other appliances later on. In fact, it is estimated that as of 2016, Hisense had about a 12 percent market share of refrigerators sold in the United States (compared to 21 percent for Samsung and 5 percent for LG). Although it is a healthy, publicly traded company with an impressive history, Hisense still sells most of its refrigerators and other appliances through Walmart and other large chains. Although this gives Hisense brand visibility and sales in the United States (which is a good thing), it also suggests that they may have difficulty competing on price against the most well-known brands.

Although much of their products are manufactured in factories owned by other companies (such as TCL), some of their products are manufactured entirely by the Hisense corporation. They produce everything from televisions to washers & dryers to kettles.
